International Motorcycle Show Media Day in New York City

BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KYMCO, Suzuki, Vectrix, Vespa, Victory and more have all utilized the Cycle World International Motorcycle Shows® to unveil new motorcycles and concept vehicles to the world. Although the Cycle World International Motorcycle Shows take place in 11 major US cities, only two shows are host to Media Days: Long Beach and New York. A West and East Coast location offers national media two opportunities to be first on the scene to report on the industry’s latest. The 2010 New York Media Day was on Friday January 22nd and it was very exciting.

Cycle World, BMW, Victory, Suzuki, Yamaha Star, Honda, Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Hardcore Choppers and TapouT all gave fifteen minute presentations to the media.  Pieter de Waal, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA, gave a very persuasive presentation of the 2010 S 1000 RR Superbike. This German engineered superbike is rated at 193 horse power and top speeds over 125 mph. The S 1000 RR introduces the first genuine racing ABS which is fully adjustable to match the road conditions and rider skill level.

Victory unveiled the limited edition 106cu 6 speed Vegas LE. This bike was inspired by Gregor Moe, Laura Klark and Matt Waring who have taken Victory motorcycles to the Salt Flats to set world speed records. Victory will only build 100 of these. To buy one you have to choose one of four color schemes and place an order on their website. Then you take your order confirmation to a dealer and put down a deposit. Order by February 15th and take delivery in March.

Honda garnered a lot of attention with the introduction of the VFR1200F with their revolutionary dual clutch transmission. Ducati put on a dynamic fashion show with long legged models, music, lights and a lot of Italian panache! The 2010 Ducati apparel collection was very nice but the fashion show was outstanding!

Harley-Davidson took advantage of their media time by unveiling a brand new model 1200 Sportster that was kept under a black cloak prior to the unveiling. The 48 is the newest in the Dark Custom line and is called the 48 in recognition of the peanut style gas tank first introduced by Harley in 1948. The 48 features fat tires front and back, a thin solo seat and under handlebar mounted mirrors.

As the IMS opened up to the public at noon, the media were given a short preview of the stunt show performed at the IMS by the Ducati Freestyle Stunt Team.  Then the masses stormed into the Jacob Javits Convention Center to check out the latest in motorcycle technology and enjoy everything the 29th Annual Cycle World IMS had to offer.

Harley Unveils New Model in New York City at the International Motorcycle Show

The 48 1

Harley-Davidson unveiled a new model Sportster at 11:00am this morning at the New York City International Motorcycle Show! The newest Sportster is a 1200 and will be called the 48 in recognition of the iconic peanut tank first introduced in 1948. The styling takes the Nightster look to the next level of raw blacked out stripped down custom. The peanut tank is displayed prominently. A very thin un-Harley like solo seat about two inches thick sits between the tank and the fender (26″ seat height). The rear fender is very clean. On the front end there is a fat front wheel which is way cool, sort of like a Fat Bob treatment for the Sporty. It has forward controls. The rear view mirrors have been repositioned on this model UNDER the handlebars so that you can see more than just your shoulders! MSRP for vivid black is $10,499. Here is a video of the unveiling taken on my new HD Flip:

$500 Competetive Bike Exchange

competitive bike program

Harley-Davidson is running a special promotion during January 2010 to promote the trade in of non Harley-Davidson motorcycles toward a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. At RC USA we all know you shouldn’t need a special promotion as incentive to trade in an import on a true American icon.

Buyers who trade in an eligible competitive brand motorcycle toward an eligible 2008, 2009 or 2010 Harley will receive $500 toward their purchase in addition to their trade in. Click here for more details on this offer.

The trade-in must be a two-wheel street legal motorcycle 150 cc or greater. The owner must have held the title and a valid registration on the competitive model prior to November 30, 2009. Harley-Davidson® and Buell® motorcycles are not eligible for this offer.

Now might be the time to trade in your import and buy a real American legend. $500 is a pretty good incentive to make your dreams come true. According to the Harley-Davidson website dealer locator, all three Harley-Davidson dealers in Delaware are particpating in this promotion. If you buy a new Harley-Davidson in Delaware, make sure to tell the sales person that The Jay Green sent you.

Two Years of Motorcycle Blogging!

I started this blog on January 1st, 2008. This past weekend marks our 2nd Anniversary! It was quite a year for us full of highs and lows but everything related to this online experience has been awesome. It was a great honor to be asked to write for East Coast Biker in March. It made me feel like a legitimate motorcycle journalist. It was an even bigger honor to be asked by Harley-Davidson to attend their 2010 Product Launch party in October along with reporters from main stream media including the Wallstreet Journal and Maxim magazine. Following our write up of that experience we received 1,200 hits in one day with a little help from Harley-Davidson’s Twitter account. They actually Twitted us twice in October; once for a safety tip article called Watch Those Wheels. That got us almost to 7,500 visitors for October. We received 6,701 visitors this past month without any special help. Our online store www.Shop.RoadCaptainUSA.com was extremely successful thanks to our 12 Volt Power Port catching on as a simple way to hook up a GPS unit to your motorcycle.

In November I experimented with adding adult content to our blog but decided it wasn’t inline with our goals for Road Captain USA. The Babe Page was eliminated within its first thirty days of inception. I did however add some new catagories in the fall that are here to stay. One of them is Tuesdays Tip where I write an informative safety tip article and publish it on a Tuesday.

Moving into 2010 I am excited to announce that I will be writing for the Examiner covering the topic of motorcycle travel for the Wilmington, DE edition. More information on how you too can become an Examiner in the near future. I am also excited to announce I have started writing a book that will be a motorcycle riders resource book for riders in Delaware. I started this project with enthusiasm one night and then dropped it like a bad habit. I guess it seemed kind of cold when compared to the interactive experience of writing online. I’ll have to get back to it but it might take me longer to write this book than originally anticipated.

I’m looking forward to some awesome experiences in 2010! I am currently serving as the Volunteer Coordinator for the 2010 State Rally Comittee for the Delaware and Maryland State HOG Rally. I will continue to serve First State HOG as the Director, Road Captain and Webmaster. Glimmerman has planned a trip for First State to Niagra Falls which should be one heck of an adventure. I can’t wait to ride my motorcycle to another country with my fellow First Staters!

Please keep coming to our blog. Diana and I love to read your comments, so if you are lurking you need to start letting us know you are there. We appreciate the feedback and support from those of you who do leave comments. Let us know if there are topics you would like us to write about or events we should cover.

Remember: Ride and Have Fun!

Top Ten Motorcycle Music Videos

Here is a link to the top ten motorcycle music videos according to DC Motorcycle Travel Examiner Mark Poesch: http://www.examiner.com/x-2294-DC-Motorcycle-Travel-Examiner~y2009m2d3-Motorcycle-music-video-2–Joey-J-and-the-Shovelheads-Open-Road

Mark has Open Road by Joey J and the Shovelheads rated number two among some big names including Springsteen, Steppenwolf, Meatloaf, and Bob Seger… but I think Open Road is by far the best!

Joey J will be launching a new website in January 2010 at www.lowlevelflyers.com

Sportster Needs New Home

Sporty

I got an e-mail from a friend and First State HOG member who is selling a mint condition 1998 Harley-Davidson Sportster. He is a Rider’s Edge Instructor and has a Wide Glide so I guess he doesn’t need two motorcycles. He would like someone in HOG, preferably from First State, to buy it and keep it in the HOG family.

I am selling my 1998 Sportster 1200 Custom.  I’ve owned this bike since September 2001.  The original owner was my cousin. This is one of the nicest looking Sportsters you’re going to find.  I’ve never had a lick of trouble with this bike.  It is worth every penny of $6,000 with all the accessories and it’s in fantastic condition.  I would love to see my Sporty go to one of our FSH members or family.  If possible can you send this information out.  I’m entertaining any and all reasonable offers.  Thanks so much.
