S100 Special Surfaces Cleaner & Plexus – Product Reviews

S100 Special Surfaces Cleaner

S100 Special Surfaces Cleaner will clean plastics like your helmet shield, motorcycle shield and if you have them… fairings. This white milky stuff in a pump bottle will clean your shield so clean you won’t even see it. It will take dead bugs off with ease. Although the product works great it doesn’t travel well. I put mine inside a zip lock bag and then inside a plastic shopping bag and somehow the milky substance still ends up in my saddlebag. I bought mine at New River Gorge Harley Davidson, I’m sure you won’t have any problem finding it at your local motorcycle supply shop. I don’t see it available at J&P Cycles or JC Whitney. Of course you can get it at Dennis Kirk.

Previously I used Plexus which I picked up at Harley Davidson of DuBois. Unlike S100, it is an aerosol product which travels better. It worked well enough but the aerosol has a funny smell and sure can stink up a Motel room so that you can’t breathe. I think I’m going to order some more Plexus from JC Whitney for traveling and keep the S100 Special Surfaces Cleaner at home. Remember to use the Plexus outdoors so you can breathe. Click here to see Plexus available at JC Whitney.

We had similar results with bug spray! No I don’t mean that you can clean your helmet shield with Off or Cutter! But we had a bottle of liquid Cutter in a pump bottle that leaked all over our stuff (not a pretty sight). Now I bring the aerosol can of Off instead and keep what’s left of the liquid Cutter at home.

What have we learned? Liquids in a pump work great but don’t travel well. The S100 Special Surfaces Cleaner is really good stuff. Don’t share a Motel room with anyone who cleans their helmet shield with Plexus while in the Motel room. Make them go outside to spray that stuff!

Another offical Road Captain USA Travel Tip from Jay: while traveling you can use a dirty sock from the day before as a rag to clean your helmet or motorcycle shield. Toss the dirty socks in the trash when you are done so that you don’t have to pack dirty laundry.

  1. The S-100 stuff has always been really good. I have not tried that stuff that you are talking about here. I have tried the Plexus. I take that on the road in a small pump that twist locks. I am going to run out and get the S-100 and try it.

  2. Good stuff. I have used the dirty sock and cotton underwear too! Whatever works is good!

  3. Why are you cleaning your bike in your motel room?

I’m not going to tell you what I use my dirty socks for, but it ain’t for polishing!

I brought a can of aerosol glass cleaner w/me to Milwaukee. Joker’s travel tip: Before buying, take the cap off and make sure the little button/spray thingy is there! I wanted to do my windshield in New York someplace and when I broke out my new can of glass cleaner, the button was missing! A whole brand new can in the rubbish. I was pissed!!!

  4. Just cleaning the helmet in the room, not the motorcycle. Bummer about the button missing!

  5. What’s wrong with a room towel and water? Just a thought. Wouldn’t have to worry about faulty caps and containers 🙂

  6. I like starting the day by making sure my helmet shield is perfectly clean. Do you think plain water will do the trick?

  7. Yep. Plain water and elbow grease. I have done it that way many many times. I don’t always carry detergents with me when I ride. Not to say products don’t work better–I use them too, might even try these for home use, I just don’t use them all the time. I have had my windshield and helmet shield full of locust guts–the worst, sticky and yellow guts, and used just water cuz that’s all I had. Spit works too. I use that under my dive masks in the ocean. Keeps the shield and masks from fogging up. So does a dot of JOY diswashing detergent on the inside of the shield.

  8. Does it have to be the JOY brand or do all dishwashing detergents double as anti fogging agents?

  9. Ha! This is getting funny now, but, yes, actually. The JOY brand is the only that really works. Honestly. Not kidding. I know this all sounds silly stupid, but the truth is I learned this when I took diving lessons back in the 80’s. I could see clearly with it underwater. I tried it when it rained on my helmets cause I wear a mask under my shield (that is suppose to be anti-fog)but fogs up on me. It worked after just trying it for a joke. I use now for anit-fog on the “inside” of the shields. Just a dot though. Otherwise you might want to blow bubbles if its raining:) Something in that brand that covers the surface…don’t know what it is… just know it does the job. I know its not a shield product, but I was only saying it does work. Can’t say if it is any good for the shields though. Not going there. Mine have lasted, but you never know…I don’t use a shield all the time I like the Purple Stuff too. Anyway, good post for new products.
