On The Road – Successful Motorcycle Touring- Book Review

Succesful Motorcycle Touring

I finally finished On The Road – Successful Motorcycle Touring published by Motorcycle Riders Club of America and written by Dr. Gregory Frazier. The book is only available to members of the club who join the Riders Club Library. This was my first book I received from The Riders Club Library and I was only charged $9.00 for the hard cover 160 page glossy book. I also received a FREE bike coaster (kick stand plate) with the book.

Dr. Frazier has toured the world by motorcycle five times and writes motorcycle travel books and articles. If you are interested in all things motorcycle than you will find this book extremely interesting. On the other hand if you do not plan to leave your country or if you do, you utilize a cushy guided tour than this book may not be for you. It is full of interesting stories and tips that you would not think of that are applicable only if you leave the comfort of your homeland. Things like shipping spare parts to foreign campgrounds, carrying multiple wallets and copies of important documents with you. Making sure you have adaquate health and vehicle insurance coverage for places you are going to.

For me it was eye opening in the fact that the type of touring we are doing here in the United States is only the tip of the iceburg in motorcycle travel. Our country is the easiest country to travel by motorcycle. You are never far from fuel stops, communication, repair facilities and emergency health services. In contrast to riding through the jungle of Africa we have it easy. Our roads are paved and pretty well maintained. We don’t have to carry a full set of spare electrical parts or worry about doing emergency repairs on yourself or your bike.

Although there are alot of useful tips you can apply to touring within your own country, you don’t have to read a 160 page book to pick up a few tips. I recommend you read this book this if you are interested in all things motorcycle, consider yourself a motorcycle intellectual, have an insatiable appetite for motorcycle stories and information and/or are planning to travel internationally by motorcycle.

Although I have included a link or two about Dr. Frazier in this post, there is a ton of interesting information available about this champion of motorcycle culture. Just Google “Dr. Gregory Frazier” for more informative articles and stories about this dynamic motorcycle adventurer.

  1. Thanks. I believe that I am going to have to pick up this book. Although I don’t plan on leaving the US, I would love to at least read about other places. Who knows, maybe it will broaden my horizons.

  2. You’ll be a world traveler in no time.

  3. Thanks for the insight of this book. I am planning a long trip this year and you eased my mind a little about travelling about our country. I am excited to do this. I know I am not alone in doing so, but this will be very helpful to me.

  4. I’m glad I did some good for you KT. If I were you I would get in touch with Carolyn at Bluepoof. I see Bluepoof on your blog roll. Carolyn is quite the adventure biker. I believe she is also from California and is planing a trip from Cali to Key West to WI and back. Now that’s a trip! I’m sure she can give you some first hand travel tips women to women.
